2017-2018

Reception:

In reception, children will start to learn French through songs, games and play acting. Their learning will be very interactive.

Children will learn basic greetings: how to say hello and goodbye and saying what their name is. They will learn to count up to 10 and some colours. They will also learn some of the most common farm animals.

During the year, we will cover three topics:

  • Superheroes where they will learn some actions
  • The Hungry Caterpillar where they’ll learn food and life cycle
  • Small Creatures where they’ll learn some insects names

Year 1:

In year 1, children will continue to learn French through songs, games and play acting. Their learning will be very interactive.

Children will learn more greetings and will engage in mini-conversations asking each other their names and how they feel. They will practice using numbers up to 10.

We will also cover three topics:

  • Farm animals where they will learn common animals and simple adjectives to describe them
  • Wild animals where they will learn about habitats and how to express more feelings.
  • Transport and Holidays where they will learn common modes of transports and famous landmarks in France.

Year 2:

In year 2, children will continue to learn French through songs, games and play acting. Their learning will be very interactive but there will be an introduction to the written words.

Children will learn more questions and will engage in mini-conversations asking each other their names, their age and how they feel. They will learn numbers up to 20.

We will also cover five short topics:

  • Parts of the body and actions : pupils will learn body parts and some actions associated with daily routine
  • Family and toys : pupils will learn the different members of the family
  • Food : pupils will learn fruits, vegetables, snacks and drinks
  • Circus and dressing-up: in these interactive topics, children will learn lots of related vocab as well as reinforce their knowledge of colours
  • Superheroes: actions, clothes and stories

 

 

Year 3:

In year 3, children will continue to learn French through songs, games and play acting. Their learning will be very interactive and they will increase their knowledge of vocab and spellings. We will introduce some basic grammatical concepts (gender, plurals, adjectives)

Children will learn more questions and will engage in short conversations made of up to 4 exchanges. They will increase their confidence in using and recognising numbers up to 31.

We will also cover four topics:

  • calendar: children will learn days of the week, months, weather phrases and numbers to 31.
  • farm animals: children will look at food and farming in France through animal farming and food regional specialities
  • pets: children will learn how to ask and say if they have a pet. They will also be able to use a few adjectives to describe pets
  • plant life cycle: we will look at plants life cycle through reading “Dix petites graines” and we will make our own mini-books

 

Year 4:

In year 4, children will continue to learn French through songs, games and play acting. Their learning will be very interactive and they will increase their knowledge of vocab and spellings. We will introduce more grammatical concepts (verbs and adjective agreements)

Children will learn more questions and will engage in longer conversations made of up to 5 exchanges. They will increase their confidence in using and recognising numbers up to 31.

We will also cover three longer topics:

  • All about me: in this topic children will learn to ask and answer a wide range of questions about personal information
  • me and my family: pupils will learn to describe themselves and others and will learn how to use two very important French verbs, être & avoir
  • food: pupils will learn about ingredients for the famous French crêpes amongst other delicious food. They’ll learn how to order food and drink and express personal likes and dislikes

Year 5:

In year 5, children will continue to learn French through songs, games and role-playing. Pupils will consolidate their understanding of grammatical concepts while playing interactive word games.

We will also cover three longer topics:

  • body: children will learn names of body parts and they will learn how to spell adjectives correctly
  • sports: pupils will learn sports and activities. This topic will introduce them to two new French verbs faire and jouer. Pupils will also start to use and create longer and more complex sentences.
  • clothes and weather: pupils will be able to describe clothes and construct complex sentences linking clothes and weather

Year 6:

In year 6, children will continue to learn French through songs, games and role-playing. Pupils will consolidate their understanding of grammatical concepts while playing interactive word games.

We will also cover four longer topics:

  • daily routine and time: children will learn how to say what they usually do on a school day. They will learn how to say at what time, and how to answer accurately
  • school stuff: pupils will learn school subjects and facilities. This topic will give them the opportunity to express their likes and dislikes and they will learn to justify their opinions
  • house and home: pupils will learn about the different type of houses and furniture. They will learn to describe their own home and bedroom
  • about the town: pupils will learn about places in town, and how to get there. They will take part in role-plays asking and giving directions
