Year 6 Newsletter

In Literacy this term, we are going to be understanding how to write for different purpose such as to inform and to entertain through biographies and narrative. We will be recapping all the different types of punctuation, learning new ways to structure and link our sentences and consolidating all the spelling rules from year 5 and 6. We will be having a twice weekly handwriting focus to improve our fluency and legibility. In reading, we will be looking at The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Please ensure your child is being heard read at home every week.

Our main focus this term is understanding number. We will be learning how to read, write and order numbers up to ten million, rounding numbers and beginning to look at fractions, decimals and percentages. We are also going to consolidate the formal methods and regularly practise times table and number bonds. Homework relevant to the week’s learning will be sent out and will be marked the following week.

Our theme is World at War, where our primary focus will be the Second World War. We will be learning about the key events that happened during the war and how they linked together. We will be understanding why the war happened and finding out about the Holocaust, listening to wartime music and debating the moral decisions made by leaders during the war. In geography, we will be refining our atlas skills. In ICT, we will be creating our own infomercial about E-Safety. We will be learning how to have spontaneous conversations in French and how to play different team games in PE.

We are going to the Hippodrome in October and we are planning a very exciting overnight trip to London in December. Please lookout for lots more information about this and other trips across the year in the coming weeks.

Other information

As you know, year 6 is a SATs year. Throughout the term, we will be formally assessing the children to help them get used to what the SATs will be like and consolidate their learning.  We appreciate your continued support and if you have any concerns, please feel free to speak to any member of the year 6 team.
