At Greenholm Primary School we are committed to giving all children the opportunity to learn in the great outdoors. We believe that learning outside the classroom can develop children’s self-esteem, well-being, behaviour and social skills through a range of practical and engaging learning opportunities. From our outdoor classroom to our raised planting beds, our outdoor gym and our woodland walk, we are able to give children daily access to nature and bring all subjects to life.
As part of the early year’s curriculum, our reception children have daily access to our newly constructed outdoor area. This outdoor area has its own outdoor classroom as well as different zones which reflect each area of the curriculum such as: a creative area, a story telling corner and a maths zone. With regular access to the outdoors, our youngest learners are developing their fine and gross motor skills, imagination and creativity and an enjoyment for learning.
Across key stages 1 and 2, we ensure that children have regular opportunities to learn beyond the four walls of the classroom and enrich their education through learning outdoors. Whether it is exploring flowering plants through science, performing on the outdoor stage or using fieldwork to study the school grounds, there are many opportunities for children to enhance their learning. In addition to this, the children also have access to extra curriculum activities such as gardening club and two beautiful outdoor areas at playtimes and lunchtime.
At Greenholm Primary School we run a Forest School programme for the children in key stage 2. The concept of Forest School was developed in Scandinavia and its key principle is that children of all ages can benefit from being in a natural, woodland environment. The Forest School sessions take places on the school grounds, in a woodland area and they provide the children with unique experiences such as den building, cooking on an open fire and hunting for minibeasts. It is through these activities that our children are given the opportunity to develop their resilience, confidence and behaviour and become independent learners.
