Reading at Greenholm
In Foundation stage a great emphasis is placed on developing and enriching children’s language with reading through book talk and role play, with phonics being taught alongside this.
The school follows’ the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme of work to teach "Systematic Synthetic phonics”. Phonics is taught daily throughout KS1 and into KS2 for those pupils who may need additional support or who have difficulties in reading. The reading curriculum also places a big emphasis on the need to develop a wider range of reading skills as well as phonics. (sight vocabulary/ comprehension)
We use a number of different reading schemes across the school and ‘real books’ are used across the curriculum, both fiction and non-fiction, to provide the children with a broad range of reading experiences. Authors are selected carefully to match topics and learning and also in response to pupils interests and needs. Bug Club is an online reading scheme which pupils are given access to at home. Books are set according pupils reading ability and are monitored by the teachers.
In KS1 all pupils have their reading books changed and are heard read weekly. Books are set according to a child’s reading ability and a range of different reading schemes are used. It is school policy that pupils will not have their reading books changed unless their reading record has been signed/ a comment made. This is so we can monitor the children who are not heard read at home and ensure extra provision is made for them in school time.
In KS2 pupils are taught to become more independent readers, but are given opportunity to change home readers weekly. A record is kept of what the children have read and is monitored by the teachers. Should children need extra support withe their reading, they are heard read at least weekly and are supported alongside a number of other interventions in school, such as volunteer readers.
Pupils have daily guided reading lessons from reception up to year 6. Within these lessons, teachers hear pupils read, and a range of reading strategies and comprehension skills are taught. Discussions take place where children talk and write to demonstrate their comprehension of the texts they are studying and share their opinions and knowledge. Shared texts are explored in these lessons and are used as the context to teach writing skills in literacy.
